1990-2010

During the 1990s Helmer-Petersen created several large series in both black and white and colour. Winther Graphics from 1994 is connected with his earlier graphic and abstract work, while a series from the Freeport in Copenhagen from 1996 in colour depicts the harbour area under transformation.

In the last years of his career Helmer-Petersen began to experiment with digital imagery. He scanned old negatives as well as all sorts of things: a supermarket receipt, a tomato stalk, paper clips or plastic packaging. Subsequently, the scans were transformed: enlarged, stretched and digitally cropped, and became strange and wondrous graphic patterns.

The results are published in his last three books, ‘Black Noise’ (2010), ‘Back to Black’ (2011) and the posthumous ‘Black Light’ (2014).
