1940-1949

From the early 1940s Helmer-Petersen photographed architecture, ships, industrial as well as natural motives with a clear vision influenced by abstract modes of expression such as Cubism and Constructivism. He explored the familiar terrain of his hometown Copenhagen with the camera and increasingly he left a documentary style in favour of images of form, lines, patterns and colour.

In contrast to many contemporary photographers, Helmer-Petersen saw an artistic potential in colour photography and in 1948 he published the groundbreaking book ‘122 Colour Photographs’, which introduced a new kind of artistic colour photography.
